Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The ridge lines of The Big Frog Wilderness area contain many outstanding views of the surrounding mountains. This includes the Cohutta Wilderness to the south. This wilderness area contains a significant number of trails throughout but is rarely used. As a result, these trails may be in need of maintenance and our views may be blocked by overgrown foliage. Our hike will take us on several different trails with Big Frog Mountain (4224 feet) being our goal.

In the map below, our hike will start out off of FS221 road on the Licklog Ridge Trail (8). We will ascend 2500 ft over 5.9 miles to the peak of Big Frog Mountain. Big Frog probably will not have any views this time of year but we will eat lunch at the top. Next, we will descend the mountain via the Big Frog Trail (1) for 4.4 miles until it intersects with Rough Creek Trail (7). The Rough Creek Trail crosses West Fork Rough Creek twice and East Fork Rough Creek. These water crossings might be rock hoppable but sticking your feet in the water may be welcome at this point in the hike. We will hike Rough Creek Trail for 2.9 miles until it intersects with Licklog Ridge where we will hike the last 1 mile or so back to the trail head.

I estimate 14.2 miles and 3500 feet of elevation. If we find the hike is more than we expected, we can cut a corner and save about 2 miles, 400 feet of elevation and two river crossings.

Pace: Our pace will be moderate. ~3 mph on the flats and downhills and slower on the uphills

Will this event occur rain or shine? No, not in severe weather.
