Itinerary:
This is a moderate-to-strenuous, nine-mile, in-and-out hike.

We start at Dicks Creek Gap at 2675 feet and go south on the AT. Our destination is Kelly Knob in four and a half miles. We go up for about two miles to Powell Mountain at around 3800 feet. Then we level out and cruise for a little over a mile before we start going up Kelly Knob for a climb of a little less than a mile.

The AT is constructed such that there are no switchbacks up anything called a knob. This is just one of their quirks or conventions, so I am told, and we will just have to deal with it. I think we are up to it.

Kelly Knob is 4276 feet and is tied with Coosa Bald for the being the 10th highest peak in Georgia. So knob or not, it’s pretty high.

After we eat lunch there, we come back down the way we came.
