This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Let's do a 9 mile hike 8:30 am Friday morning just because it's cool.  Seriously, the temperature is forecasted to drop over the next few days. Monday is predicted to have a low of 54 degrees F! But we have to start early because the high is supposed to get up to 80.

Meet at Red Top Mtn State Park & Lodge (Park Office) where you can purchase a daily or annual parking pass and use the restrooms. At 8:30 we will hike out of the parking lot by heading South on the Sweetgum Trail. This hike will be one continuous loop on the Homestead and Sweetgum Trails which offer some diverse scenery winding through the woods and along some of the inlet shores of Lake Allatoona. We'll save the best for last by doing a short out and back on White Tail Trail for some beautiful views of the lake.

These trails have some rolling hills along the lakeshore and forest above. We will hike at a moderate pace (about 3 mph) and take breaks. This is meant to be a recovery hike for those who have already done a lot of hiking this week and is also appropriate for regular D2/D3 hikers. This is not a good hike for anyone without recent AOC D3 or more difficult hiking experience.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

Meet at the Red Top Mtn State Park & Lodge (Park Office):

From Atlanta, take I-75 Northbound to exit #285. Go right (east) on Red Top Mountain Road SE and cross Lake Allatoona. Make a Left onto Park Marina Rd. Then Right at Lodge Rd SE. Park at Red Top Mtn State Park and Lodge. Note: We are NOT meeting at the Visitor's Center.

Notes:

Georgia State Parks require a parking pass.  You can buy a daily pass ($5.00) or annual pass at the park office, where we will start the hike.

There are restrooms located at the Red Top Mtn State Park & Lodge (Park Office) where we will park and begin our hike.  There are also restrooms at the Visitor's Center which we will pass about 2/3 of the way through the hike and stop if anyone needs to refill their water or take a bathroom break.

It is requested that anyone who registers for this event have a few recent D3 or higher level hiking events with the AOC. Otherwise, this may not be a suitable hike for you.
