Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Start your Halloween holiday with a morning hike and fall views of north Georgia!

We will start at Unicoi Gap and hike north/east along the AT, climbing roughly 1000 feet over approximately 1.3 miles to the summit of Rocky Mountain. The next 1.2 miles descend back down to Indian Grave Gap. We then follow the gravel road for a short bit until reaching an intersection with Rocky Mountain trail. next, we head back along Rocky Mountain trail with mild elevation change which dumps us back onto the AT to finish the last .75 mile return for a total of about 5.3 miles.

The trail offers a couple opportunities to catch views of Mt. Yonah in the distance.

We will hike at a steady moderate pace (2-2.5mph) without many stops (only to regroup, catch a quick breath). The hike should take about 3 hours and we should be back on the road just before lunch time.

Please note this is exploratory -- I have not hiked this trail, but it is well marked (AT white blazes, Rocky Mtn blue blazes).

Also note, we will be hiking this in weather up to a moderate rainfall (but no lightning or storms).

From Indian Trail Park-n-Ride, get on I-85 Northbound.

Continue north and then keep left onto I-985 at the fork.

Continue north on US23 (I-985 turns into this).

After 30 miles, turn left onto GA 384.

After 15 miles, turn right onto GA 75.

Continue on GA75 for 12 miles and the Unicoi Gap trailhead parking lot will be on the right side of the road.

Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $64.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
