Itinerary:

This event will coincide with another AOC hike to Springer Mountain on the same day, but instead of coming from Amicalola Falls, we'll be coming from the opposite direction! (and it's not quite as difficult) Hopefully, if all goes well, both AOC hiking groups will meet together at Springer Mountain, have lunch, then part ways.

We'll be doing a "double figure 8 hike" which includes both the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT).  We'll start off following the AT to Springer Mountain, the official southern terminus of the AT.  The distance is about 4.5 miles. We will cross the BMT twice before arriving at Springer.  Hopefully, we'll meet the other AOC group at their mid-way point.

After enjoying lunch at Springer Mountain, we'll take the BMT back to Three Forks.  A very nice overlook awaits us roughly 1 mile from Springer.  This portion of the hike has a few short climbs and a few easy stream crossings (rock hoppers), but it's relatively rolling.

Please note, this is a D4 hike, so previous D3 hiking experience is necessary.  Expect us to move at a pace of between 2.5 and 2.9 mph, but we'll stop and take pictures to enjoy the day.  In total we will hike approximately 10.5 miles and gain approx. 2,100 feet.

Optionally we can stop for a group dinner following the hike.  We can discuss this prior to carpool departure.

Please Note:  If you are a carpool driver, your car will get very dusty and dirty. About 30-40 minutes of the drive is on rough Forest Roads.  Low clearance vehicles can make the trip, but high clearance vehicles are ideal.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Water / fluids to last at least 4 hours of hiking
  • Snacks or light lunch
  • Jacket (dress in layers, as you will warm up when hiking)
  • Good hiking shoes or boots
Recommended Items to Bring:

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $68.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

A good portion of this ride is on Forest Roads. Higher clearance vehicles are recommended and your car WILL GET VERY DUSTY AND DIRTY.  Low clearance vehicles can make the drive ok, you will need to be on the lookout for rain-formed potholes and rocks in the road and take it extra slow.
