Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Tired of huge groups then this small 4 person trip* may be for you. I have hiked most of the trails but not all of them on the route which is why it has been marked as exploratory. Along the course of the hike we will pass multiple waterfalls, rocky overlooks, an old cabin, and even a small cave. I do not have a gps track but based on various sources it appears to be somewhere in the 19-20 mile range but could be a little longer or shorter. I expect the moving pace to be moderately quick but not a fitness hike pace at between 3 and 3.5 mph with plenty of stops at scenic spots

Reasons you may like this hike:

  1. Small group
  2. Very scenic
  3. Long hike but not that much elevation gain.
  4. Cheap carpool(I'm driving and it is $10 a person)

Reasons you may not like this hike:

  1. Long drive for a day hike (~3 hours each way)
  2. Less people to talk to
  3. Rocky in places
  4. Not enough elevation gain
  5. Don't like pretty places
  6. Gone all day

Here is a map of the area http://www.friendsofscsra.org/Maps/Savage-Gulf.pdf

Hike plan:

  1. Start at Stone Door Ranger Station
  2. Take Laurel Falls Loop Trail
  3. Stone Door Trail
  4. Big Creek Rim Trail
  5. Greeter Trail
  6. Big Creek Gulf Trail
  7. Ranger Creek Falls
  8. Big Creek Gulf Trail
  9. Connector Trail
  10. Go to Schwoon Spring
  11. Back on Connector Trail
  12. Back to cars on Stone Door Trail
