Itinerary:
Join us for a beginner backpacking trip along the Pine Mountain Trail at F.D. Roosevelt State Park

The total miles for this trip will be about 9 miles between Saturday & Sunday. This is a beginner's trip so we will be moving at a very relaxed 1-1.5 mile per hour pace.

After getting our permits from the Park Office, we'll drive to the Dowdell's Knob Parking Area. Here we'll arrange to drop off half of our available cars and all pile into the other half and drive 4.6 miles to the WJSP Tower Parking Lot. We'll unload our gear and do a double-check to make sure everyone has everything.

We're going to start out at Mile Marker 23 on the Pine Mountain Trail and heading North along the Wolfden Loop. We'll make several very shallow stream crossings and hike up past Csonka Falls, Big Rock Falls, Slippery Rock Falls, and Cascade Falls where we can stop for lunch. We'll continue up and around where we'll plan on camping out at Sassafras Hill Campsite (near MM 18.5). Total miles for Saturday should be about 4.5 miles. This will take about 5 hours and we should be at camp around 3pm.

We'll set up camp, gather wood (We are allowed fires in the fire rings), cook dinner and hang out around the campfire that night.

In the morning we'll have breakfast and everyone can tear down camp. We'll continue on past Rocky Point, Hornet Knob, Brown Dog Bluff, and ending at Dowdell Knob (MM - 14). Total Miles for Sunday should be about 4.5 miles. This should take about 5 hours and we'll probably be back to our cars around 3pm.

There will also be an optional information meeting at 7pm (30 minutes before the AOC Social) at 5 Season's Brewery on Nov 11th. This meeting will allow our event members to meet up with us regarding any questions you have regarding backpacking gear and what you can expect on this trip. We will both be bringing our loaded backpacks so you can see what kind of gear we use on our trips, with plenty of time before the trip for you to take stock of your own gear and make any necessary adjustments. REI does rent basic backpacking gear, so don't run out and buy tons of equipment if you don't necessarily have it. Many folks make adjustments to their own gear as they learn what works best for them. We will also offer an opportunity, for those interested, for event members to coordinate with each other to group pack. This can save tremendous weight, and for those of you who may have backpacked before, weight can be everything.

We are specifically setting this trip up for beginners. We encourage you to e-mail us with any questions you may have about gear, what it takes to backpack in general, or any other concerns you may have. Intermediate and advanced backpackers are of course welcome!
