This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Please join us for a fantastic day of paddling down the Hiwassee River in Tennessee!  The Hiwassee River is dammed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in four locations.  This five plus mile section of the river is beautiful, clear, and wide and offers 6 different Class II rapids.   The rapid names are in order as follows: Thread the Needle, Mary Nell Point, Stairstep Rapid, Little Rock Island, Funnel Rapid, and Devil's Shoals. You can find a description of each at: http: //www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1751

We will be using the Hiwassee Outfitters (see link below) to rent kayaks (NOT rafts). Your trip leaders will be renting duckies (inflatable, whitewater kayaks) for $30 each. You can also rent sit on top kayaks, if you prefer; the price is the same. Everything you need (PFD, paddle, boat) is included in the price. (Please see notes below.) Duckies are more stable, but tend to catch on rocks more easily, whereas sit on top kayaks, glide more easily over rocks, but are more tippy.  You can also rent tandem kayaks for $48.  The website below will give you all the information you need, and they also have a couple of great videos of the river.

NOTE:  You will need to call the outfitter when you sign up to reserve your kayak and spot on the shuttle.  You may bring your own boat, but space on the shuttle is not guaranteed.  If you think you will bring your own boat, please note that when you sign up.  Also, please confirm your reservation with us. Please reserve your spot early. We will be taking the 11:30 shuttle.  You can give the Outfitter my name (Heidi Wolff), and let them know you are with the Atlanta Outdoor Club.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $84.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

PFDs are required to be worn on the Hiwassee River.

This is a weather permitting event.  If the weather forecast is calling for thunderstorms, the event will be cancelled.

There was an issue with a generator last year, and we had to cancel this event due to water levels being too low.  We will keep an eye on the water levels up until the event.
