Itinerary:
Join us for an urban hike through Olmstead Linear Park in Druid Hills and into Fernbank Forest. This park is composed of six unique sections. The last section, Deepdene Park, is a wooded tract with a stream winding through it. It is 22 acres and with a topography that ranges from steep slopes to a flat meadow. From there we will head towards the Fernbank Forest.

Fernbank Forest is a 65-acre mature mixed hardwood forest located at the Fernbank Science Center. It has one of the few remnants of original forest vegetation in the Georgia Piedmont, and has been extensively studied by scientists. It consists of large specimens of white oak and tulip poplar, which grow up to 131 feet tall. Common animals include raccoon, opossum, gray squirrel, chipmunk, American crow, pileated woodpecker, box turtle and several snake species.

We will explore the 1 1/2 miles of trails in the forest and then head back to our cars through the park the way we came in. The total distance will be 5 1/2 to 6 miles, depending on the trails we take in the forest.

If there is enough interest, we will have lunch at one of the many restaurants in the Virginia Highland area.
