Itinerary:

I first hiked this loop with my daughters many years ago, and loved it. We first explored down an unmarked trail to find a beautiful waterfall at Overflow Creek. We heard it before we saw it, since we had to go down a steep narrow trail through the rhododendrons into a deep ravine. It has a nice deep pool of water at the base of the waterfall for diving, doing flips, and jumping. This time of year the water will probably be just the right temperature for most people.

After we spend some time here swimming and eating lunch, we'll hike to Three Forks and do some more exploring and wandering around this magical valley at the confluence of 3 rivers, hence the name.

Once we've spent at least another hour here, we'll head on up to Big Creek, where there's another waterfall to enjoy. I like to swim in here too, since it's a little colder and more suitable to someone who likes cold water. We won't spend as much time here before we head on back up to the cars.

Total distance is about 8.5 miles, so you need to be in good shape, and have good footware for being in both the water, and on the trail. This is rugged terrain, going up and down in the mountains, and in a temperate rain forest, so there's always possibility of rain. If you're prepared, it just gets better, since this country is there because of the rain.

Since this is the wilderness, and these trails are not marked, we need to stay together. Nobody jumping up ahead, and I would like a strong volunteer to bring in the sweep, if possible.

This hike is meant to be enjoyable, and not rushed. If you don't enjoy hanging around waterfalls and swimming, this is not the hike for you. The end time is approximate. If you're on a strict schedule...well, stay closer to town. I want to share this with people who love doing this type of activity. If I'm in the mood, I might even do some yoga down in the valley...if the mood strikes. :-)
