Itinerary:

This is a great way to begin learning your Mountain Biking skills while taking a nice hill-less ride along the Chattahoochee River.  You will need a mountain bike or a hybrid bike for this ride.  We begin with the crowds at the Cochran Shoals lot, but will soon move to areas with very fewer people along Columns Drive and Johnson Ferry South and North Units.  This is for mountain bike/hybrids only because we head out onto some brief single track trails where there are ample roots and rocks to negotiate.  That is a good thing, because if you are working on your riding skills, you can bring your speed up and get some nice practice on these little sections.  We will begin the ride from the Interstate North main parking lot.  You are welcome to park across the river in the Powers Island parking lot and ride back across the bridge.  It is a nice view of the river there.  If you don't have an annual pass, you will need to visit the pay station to pay the $3 fee.  It takes cash or credit cards.  We will ride out onto the main wide gravel trail up to Columns Drive.  We will ride up Columns for a bit to the Johnson Ferry South entrance and then off to the trails near the river.  We will cross under the Johnson Ferry Road bridge and into the Johnson Ferry North Unit where we will take several trails near the river before looping back around.  I have found this to be a very relaxing and beautiful Sunday morning ride.  You don't have to pack water because we stop at various fountains and bathrooms along the way.  Here's a view of one of my previous rides of this area.
