Itinerary:
This is the second part of backpacking the Georgia AT series. We'll be setting out on the AT heading north from Woody Gap to Tesnatee Gap crossing over Blood Mountain where we will stay the night. Overall mileage will be around 17 miles.

We'll be getting an early start and drive up to Tesnatee Gap where we will leave a car and then we'll shuttle the rest of the cars and people down to Woody Gap.

We'll start off at Woody Gap heading North on the AT, hiking 7.0 miles to Blood Mountain Shelter where we will spend the night.
The first day's mileage breaks down as follows:
Woody Gap to Big Cedar Mountain: 1.0 mile, gaining ~600 ft
Big Cedar Mountain to Lance Creek: 2.2 miles, descending ~850 ft
Lance Creek to Blood Mountain: 5.0 miles ascending ~1600 ft of small knobs and gaps

Total mileage for the day: 8.2 miles

We'll be spending the night on Blood Mountain which may get cold. Especially since fires are not allowed there. Also, there are no water sources at the shelter, so we'll have to get water before we get to the shelter. Be prepared!
On day 2 we'll pack up and make our way to Tesnatee Gap covering 7.9 miles over rolling terrain.
Day two's mileage is as follows: Blood Mountain shelter to Neels Gap: 2.4 miles descending ~1400 ft
Neels Gap to Leveland Mountain summit: 1.5 miles ascending ~800 ft
Walk along Leveland Mountain crest for 0.2 miles
Leveland Mountain to Cowrock Mountain: 3.0 miles over rolling terrain
Cowrock Mountain to Tesnatee Gap: 0.8 miles descending ~700 ft
Total mileage for day 2: 7.9 miles

Because we will be backpacking in cold weather, I'm not going to allow any one who hasn't done any backpacking before. If you sign up and I see that you haven't completed any backpacking events, I will be contacting you to determine your level of experience.

Required Items to Bring:
You will definitely need:
- cold weather gear
- food for 2 days
- rain gear (just in case!)
- 2 liters of water and water treatment (there's no water source at the shelter!)
- a sleeping bag rated at least 20 degrees or better
- head lamp
- Tent! I'm going to recommend that you bring your tent even though we are staying at the shelter. The shelter only sleeps 8 people and we may not be alone. Unless you are very experienced with sleeping outdoors in the winter or are part bear, you should/will bring your tent.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
