Itinerary:
As we all know the economy has gone down and has hit state government hard. As a result the state has cut funding to our state parks. They have already been cut prior to the downturn and now are being cut more. This affects what and how the state maintains the parks. The AOC has of course used many many state parks for hiking, camping, and other fun things in the past. Seeing that our state parks are struggling we can not sit back and just go in and use them and then leave. I think as a club and citizens we need to step up and assist. So the AOC has been in contact with the Friends of Georgia State Parks and asked how we can help. We have been contacted for help by various state parks and this will be our first one this year. Panola Mountain State Park in the metro area is in need of some assistance. Here is a little background of this small somewhat unknown state park. - This unusual park near Atlanta was created to protect a 100-acre granite monadnock (mountain) often compared to Stone Mountain and Arabia Mountain. Minimally developed, Panola Mountain shelters rare plants of the Piedmont region. - I have been in contact with Jody Rice resource manager and he has asked for our assistance in the removal of non native plants and if the conditions are right the restablishing of native river cane. - So bascially we will be taking plants that do not belong in the park and removing them. In addition reintroducing plants that are supposed to be there. If you have small pruning tools, such as saws and clippers those would be great. They do have tools but the more the merry. Also in addition please dress for the weather conditions. - We will met Jody Rice to start our work day at 10am and should wrap up about 2ish or so. Then we can as a group decide if we wish to go find someplace to have a late lunch and toast our civic duty complete!
