Itinerary:

Time for one last hike ithis year.

This in-and-out hike starts at Unicoi Gap on Hwy 75, north of Helen. From the trailhead we ascend 1100 ft. over 1.3 miles to the top of Rocky Mtn, descend 800 ft. over 1.3 miles to Indian Grave Gap, ascend 1300 ft. over 2.4 miles to the summit of Tray Mtn, and continue a bit further to the off-trail lookout. We’ll have lunch there, enjoying the view, and then retrace our steps. With a total elevation gain of 3200 ft, this hike provides a good workout, but we will make stops as needed.

I am looking for a volunteer to coordinate the carpool at Indian Trail park-and-ride. I'll be joining the group at 9:00 at the Cleveland Ingles, behind the gas pumps. I would like to stop for dinner in Cleveland (Mexican) after the hike. If you cannot stay for dinner, you could drive on your own as far as the Ingles ("meet at event"), where you can join the carpool to the trailhead.

Please note that temperatures at higher elevations can be significantly lower than in the valley. Please bring extra warm clothes in your backpack.

Required Items to Bring:

2-3 bottles of water
broken-in hiking boots

a warm jacket, such as down or synthetic loft, to keep in your backpack and to pull out in an emergency or if it is cold at lunch

shoes (and a bag in which to place your dirty hiking boots, if traveling in someone else's car)

$$ to pay your driver

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

lunch

hiking poles

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

To Cleveland (60 miles): drive 85N, then 985N, then just before Gainesville take 129/11N. Stay on that road to Cleveland and drive right through the town to the intersection with 75 (going to Helen). The Ingles is at the NE corner of the intersection. Driving time is one hour. From there it is another half hour to the trailhead.

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):150Mile(s)
Carpool Departure Time: 8:00 am
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $60.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

I'll be contacting anyone who has not done a D5-level hike recently to determine if this is a suitable hike for you.
