Itinerary:
We have several people in the AOC that are really fast hikers when they get a chance to show their stuff. This “Hike Off” will allow them to set their own pace and try to prove that they are #1. We are expecting to get a lot of sign-ups, so we'll hold the same race over two days. The person with the fastest time of the weekend will be declared the winner. There will be second & third places as well. The race will also have sub-classifications of sex & age.

You can only sign up for one day! Either Sat or Sun.

Our course for the 1st Annual Hike Off will be the Coosa Backcountry Trail at Vogel State Park, just south of Blairsville, GA. The trail is 12.9 miles with an approximate elevation gain of 3500 feet. We will do this trail clockwise so we can attack the steepest parts of the trail on our ascent. Participants will be required to carry 10% of their body weight plus any water that they will need. There will be a weight check at the start of the race to ensure that all participants are on an even playing field. If any of the packs fall short, or the participant would rather not carry the extra weight, then they will incur a 15 minute penalty for every 1% that is not met.

We will have several check points along the route where the participant must document their arrival. These points are also “escape” routes. If these check points haven’t been reached by a predetermined time, or the racer feels they’ve burned out, then they can opt-out at these points and take a forest service road back to the trail head.

We will have a sweeper on the trail, but the participants will be on their own for a large portion of the trail and will have to be comfortable navigating blazes on their own. The trail is well marked for most of the way, and we have assembled a “trip guide” that will be issued at the start of the race that should help you navigate some of the not so well marked turns. A topo map will also be provided.

The “Hike Off” will begin at 9:30am SHARP. Please arrive at the park by 9:00am at the latest to allow for check-in at the Vogel SP Visitors Center and for a brief pre-race information session.

A carpool will be set-up at the Mansell Park & Ride on GA 400, it will depart at 7:30am. Cabins and a Campground are available on-site for those that wish to make a weekend out of it.
