Itinerary:
Moderate to Strenuous (total distance approximately 6 miles)

If you only have one day to spend in North Carolina, this is the place to go. We will begin our day at the main trailhead at Gorges State Park, which is the newest State Park in North Carolina. We’ll do the moderate to strenuous hike to Bearwallow Falls, a round trip distance of 3.2 miles. This hike has an incredible waterfall and some really beautiful scenery. Next we will hike 2.5 miles round trip along the Horsepasture river past Drift Falls, Turtleback Falls and ending at the incredible 150 foot Rainbow Falls from the same trailhead. Time allowing we can visit the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, Whitewater Falls, some 441 feet tall (a short paved path of half mile round trip to the upper overlook). There will be optional inexpensive dining at a local restaurant in Walhalla, South Carolina on the way back.

This is a long drive of some 135 miles that more than makes up for the distance with some incredible waterfalls in North Carolina’s newest state park and a National Wild and Scenic River, the Horsepasture.
