This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The Lower Ridge Trail going up to the A.T. from the Standing Indian Campground, follows a nice ridge up about 4.2 miles and gaining 2500'. I only did it once, but remember it being very beautiful. Following the A.T. for about a mile to the summit is pretty cool, which also follows the ridge. We'll have lunch at the summit, and hang out here for a bit to enjoy the mountain view. Then we'll continue south on the A.T., again along a nice ridge trail, down to Deep Gap, and then go down Kimsey Creek trail. I've heard good things about Kimsey Creek Trail, so am looking forward to hiking this portion for my first time. We'll be following the creek, with reported waterfalls and easy creek crossings.

The total mileage should be about 10.4 miles, based on the last group that hiked this trail.

I talked to the ranger, and he said the trail "should" be clear, but wants us to report back if we find any obstacles. :-) You know, due to the fire last fall that hit this area.

You will need to be in excellent shape for this hike, because we'll be going up 2500' in elevation up to 5500' above sea level. This is not for beginner hikers. We won't be racing, and this is not a fitness hike however. We will be enjoying the views, breathing the fresh air, and enjoying the rays of sun on our face.

You'll want to dress in layers, to stay cool while climbing, and to stay warm at the top.

After the hike, we'll stop in Clayton to eat. If you don't want to stop to eat after the hike, you can make arrangements at the car pool.
