Itinerary:
**Beginner cavers will have priority registration on this event** Frick's Cave Open House was cancelled because of concern for possible spread of White Nose Syndome, fatal to bat populations. Considering the high level of interest to go caving that weekend, I am offering an alternative beginner/intermediate trip to Tumbling Rock Cave in Alabama. The cave has a variety of historical and natural features, such as the remains of Salt-peter mining from the 1700's to 1800's, large flowstaone formations with nice coloration of translucent blues, grays, & whites, massive columns formations called the "elepahants feet", and a hallway of older formations called "totem gallery" like an image of old greek and roman ruins. Our main destination will be my favorite part of the cave: the "topless dome", a 400' high waterfall cascading from the ceiling. If there is time and energy, we will continue to the hidden "inner sanctum" room through the "rabbit hole". A small passage leads into a nicely colored large room. An additional option may bea challenging 100'+ climb up a steep muddy slope to the "pillar of fire". I will carry along a high power spotlight to illuminate the waterfall and large rooms that our helmet lights aren't able to reveal. There are 6 miles of cave and rooms to explore, and we'll explore as much as can safely in a group.

Required Items to Bring:
Caving or Climbing Helmet with BRIGHT Water Resistant Light (if you don't have a helmet, loaner/rentals will be available. Clean Clothes to change into. We will get very wet. Synthetic clothing, polypro is best. No cotton, no jeans unless you are okay being wet and cold. Water temp is typically around 58 degrees. Air temp in the upper dry parts of cave is relatively warm. 8 AA-size Alkaline Batteries (). These are for the helmet lights. You’ll need 4 for the light and 4 spare. Backup light, such as a medium sized 2AA or 3AA Maglight. Hiking Boots or Trekking Shoes with good tread (no smooth soles). I use a cheap $20 pair from Walmart just for caving. Knee Pads (soft only, no hard plastic cap). These can be bought at Wal-Mart or Home Depot for about $6-8. Those with a full wraparound type strap work best to hold pad in place. A Large Plastic Garbage Bag to put your dirty/wet clothes into. Gloves. Wear what you like. The cheap gardening gloves with the little rubber beads are popular. A Day Pack or Fanny Pack to hold water, snacks, flashlight, and anything else you want to bring in the cave with you. Snacks or energy bars for in the cave. Ziplock freezer bags to keep stuff dry.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Warm and dry clothes to change into. We will get very wet. Elbow pads, there is some crawling. Small camera, with watertight bags and protective case/cover. Large bath towel.
