Itinerary:

Joyce and I are very excited to share a special, AOC exclusive first with you… Ranger led hikes along the trails at Sweetwater Creek State park at night

Over two different nights in May and June, we will be covering almost all of the main trails at the park.  Each of these hikes is unique, covering different areas of the park; they are not open to the general public.  While we will be starting the events before sunset, the route will be planned to ensure the most interesting parts of the trails are done after sunset.  Because these Ranger led hikes end after normal park hours, we will be starting on time. So leave plenty of time for traffic, parking, and buying a park pass (bring $5.00 cash if you need one as the office will not be open).  Also, we will keep our group together for the entire hike.  As we trek, our ranger will occasionally share interesting historical and geological tidbits about the park. Naturally, headlamps or flashlights will be required for every attendee and will be checked before the event starts.  The cost of the events (with the exception of a very slight AOC fee) is going to the Sweetwater Creek State Park.  By the way, while the State Park does offer occasional night hikes to the ruins, these events are only 1½ miles long; they are open to the public, they go only to the ruins,  and the cost is almost the same amount as our planned events.  So this is a great opportunity for unique experiences that cover almost the entire park!

Sign up will be separate for each paid event but here are the details for each hike:

Hike Number One: Saturday, May 27th will start at 6:45 PM in front of the Visitor’s Center and we will be back at our vehicles just before 10 PM.  We will be hiking six miles along the White and Red trails with a bonus side trail that runs by Waller’s pond. Some of the highlights of this hike include Jack’s Lake and Branch, the fall and rapids along Sweetwater Creek and of course, the ruins of the New Manchester Mill.  On this day the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase (4% illumination) and will be setting as twilight falls on the park. The cost for this event is $7.75 and is paid directly the club. The cost for this event is slightly lower as the mileage is not quite as long.

Hike Number Two: Saturday June 17th will start at 6:45 PM in front of the Visitor’s Center and we will be back at our vehicles just before 10 PM.  We will be hiking seven miles along the Yellow, Blue and Orange trails.  Some of the highlights of these trails include their remoteness compared to the more well-known trails, the chance to trek among a good sized stand of young American Beech trees on the new blazed blue trail, beautiful small cascading falls flowing down a lovely spring fed creek on the Orange trail, and (on the yellow trail) the Indian cave where archaeologists estimate that Native Americans used as shelter for several thousand years.  Also included is a short side trail that gives us a nice view of the ruins from the opposite bank.  Looking at the lunar phase calendar on this day the Moon will be in its Last Quarter Phase (50% illumination). However, with moonrise being around midnight and setting around noon it will have no impact on our event.  The cost for this event is $8.75 and is paid directly to the club.  The cost is slightly higher for this event as the mileage is longer.

Because this is not an expensive event and all of the monies (apart from the slight fee added for the AOC) are going to the Sweetwater Creek State Park this is a non-refundable event - unless the event is cancelled due to weather.  If it is rescheduled, those signed up and paid for the initial date will automatically be moved to the rescheduled event.  At that time, if they cannot attend the rescheduled event, they will be offered a full refund.

Note: there is a $5 per vehicle parking fee. No carpool for these events. No dogs are allowed on these events.
