Itinerary:
Second Annual AOC Atlanta Marathon Hike.  If we can get a few AOCers to sign up, we may assemble a group from the Club to do the actual Thanksgiving 2009 event together. For this training hike we'll be walking / hiking between ZERO to 26.2 total miles - you choose the distance you want to hike! Ride MARTA (anytime during the event) back to the start at the Chamblee Station if you don't want to walk the whole route. Perfect for people with Moderate to Advanced levels who have been wanting to test their hiking limits in a safe setting. (Bring 10 one dollar bills to ride Marta back to the start.)

Visit Atlanta Marathon for information, Course Map, and Elevation Map links. We'll be starting at the 13.1 mile mark on their map. We'll hike miles 14, 15, etc to 26, and return via the Miles 1, 2, etc to mile 13.1 in effect, doing the marathon route "in reverse."

Our AOC group will gather at the CHAMBLEE MARTA STATION at the entrance on the east side of the tracks near Chamblee Tucker Road.  After waiver signing, etc. we'll walk together (westward) out to Peachtree, follow the Atlanta Marathon route toward Turner Field and return.

As mentioned above, walk as much of the route as you want (Joggers/Runners can run ahead, at their own risk, if they desire). MARTA stations abound near the route and you can jump on the train and return to the start where you left your car whenever you're ready. Link to the Marta train station locations:  Marta Train Locations

Required Items to Bring:
Ten Dollar Bills to cover the Marta Train back to the start. water bottle, good walking shoes (no new ones please)
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Make sure to wear/bring appropriate light layers of clothing.  After we start moving we can adjust our clothes to be comfortable.  Athletic shorts might be a good idea for the long haul in lieu of long exercise pants.  Temps are expected to be mid-50s to mid-60s with occasional 15-to-20-mph wind gusts.

Only bring small packs.  You will only need a little water, some snacks, extra pair of socks. cell phone, pocket camera, etc.  We'll stop along the way and refill water.  Remember, water weighs 2 pound per liter.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Meet at the Chamblee MARTA Train station:  Specifically, at the station entrance on the Eastern side of the tracks, about 50 feet from Chamblee-Tucker Road.  Of course, look for "hikers."

The address of the Chamblee MARTA station is: 5200 New Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341 -- might be handy if you'd like to prepare a map or custom driving directions to the parking lot using MapQuest.com or Google.com/maps.

Notes:
PACE - slow to moderate. Think 3.0+/- MPH Maybe 3.5 MPH if we can handle it. We'll hike long miles, but I am not going to rush or leave anyone behind. If you're dragging, Marta Stations are always nearby for a ride back to the start. Think "light weight" when packing - you should probably bring a car key, $10, a driver's license and a health card.

If bad weather arrives, we'll reschedule.

Several other Trip Leaders and Prospective Trip Leaders will be helping on the hike.  We'll try our best to stay reasonably "connected" as a group without interfering with trafic.  We may have to split into a few smaller groups with a TL in each group, if it becomes prohibitive to keep the group together.  As participants reach their "departure" point on the route, they'll let their group TL/PTL know and someone will call me so I can keep track of who's left the event and who's still on.  The plan is to not loose anyone!
