Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Besthike.com rated this one of the ten best treks in the world. 6 days/5 nights of backpacking to 3 of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the world at the base of Mt. Assiniboine, the second highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Assiniboine towers 11,850 ft. We will hike up to about 7800 ft.  Total elevation gain is 3500 ft. 

The trip leader has a youtube video and details of each day he can send you if interested. 

Day 1 Saturday 8/26: Arrive in Calgary 

Day 2: Shuttle to Sunshine Village from Calgary (2 hrs.). Hike 8.7 mi to Porcupine camp

Days 3 & 4: Hike 9.3 mi to Magog camp. Spend 2 nights. Explore alpine lakes and passess near Mt. Assiniboine. (4 mi.)

Day 5: Hike 6.8 mi. to Marvel Lake camp

Day 6: Hike 8.2 mi. to Mt. Shark Trail head. Shuttle back to Calgary 

DIFFICULTY: Approx. 38 mi. and 3500 ft. elevation gain over the 6 days. Terrain and trail are moderate inclines and declines and well maintained. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

If you do not have a history of D4 or higher backpacking and D5/D6 hiking with the club, you will be contacted to confirm your experience.  In addition, you should be able to carry a 40 lb. backpack for 6 days for this event. 

The trip leader reserves the right to consider paricipants past history and to make the final determination for participation on this event.

As an option, we can discuss possibly sharing lodging . However, you are responsible to secure your hotel.

Required Items to Bring:

All backpacking equipment, food, camping gear, appropriate clothing, water, water filter required to backpack for 6 days. Specific list provided upon being moved to active list and during planning sessions.

Cost Includes:

Trip Leader will reserve shuttle to and from trailhead 

$104 per person for various shuttles.  

3 nights camping at $10.00 each per person required at the campsite to pay in an envelope and deposit box. Other camping will be free.

Payment due date is July 19. 

Cost does not include airfare or hotel for 2 nights stay for Sat. night 8/26 and Fri. night 9/1. Participants to fly into Calgary International Airport no later than 8/26 and depart no earlier than 9/2.

The Trip Leader(s) for this event has (have) elected either to personally collect the funds that event participants are required to pay, or to require participants to pay funds directly to a third party. No funds will be paid to the Atlanta Outdoor Club for this event. Therefore, by registering for this event, you acknowledge and agree to the following: (1) the monies paid by registrants will not be monitored, managed, or otherwise accounted for by the Atlanta Outdoor Club; (2) that the Atlanta Outdoor Club bears no financial responsibility for this event; and (3) you waive any and all claims against the Atlanta Outdoor Club, and hold the Atlanta Outdoor Club harmless for the loss of any monies you paid for this event. Notwithstanding the foregoing, any paying registrant may request directly from the Trip Leader, prior to the event, a breakdown of funds collected, estimated expenses, and deposits made in anticipation of the event. Following the event, the Trip Leader must complete his or her financial accounting for the event, with supporting documentation, within 30 days of the completion of the event, and a paid registrant may request a breakdown of funds collected, money spent and supporting documentation after that time. If you are unable to obtain requested documentation, please contact the Director of Paid Events.

Nor refunds will be given after July 28.

Trek will NOT be cancelled due to weather.
