Itinerary:
Several AOCers who enjoyed our recent participation in the big New Year’s Day “Cheddarhead Hash” have suggested that we offer another AOC fun-hike/jog with the Hash House Harriers, so here it is -- this time with my friends in the “Slow Old Bastards” harrier group. Our pace will be a combination of fast walking and slow jogging over a distance of about 3 miles. No funds are collected by the AOC, but if you decide to take part, bring $6 to chip in to the SOB’s “hash cash” volunteer for your fair share of the bountiful refreshments. The location for this event has become publicized as of Thu Feb 5. It will be in Covington, GA, the quaint county seat of Newton County where "In the Heat of the Night" was shot, a few miles east of Atlanta. Note the newly added directions to the free parking lot where we and the other "hashers" will gather -- also directions to our optional 12:45 PM carpool meeting place at Northlake Mall in NE Atlanta.

The Hash House Harriers are a worldwide network of outdoor recreation enthusiasts who enjoy a non-competitive wacky sport called “hashing." For each “hash” event a designated “hare” lays a trail, usually by leaving splotches of white baking flour every 50 yards or so through parks, woods, residential neighborhoods, etc. The remaining “harriers” or “hashers” help one another follow the hare's trail until it eventually leads them to a secret party location called the “on-in.” Along with great munchies & refreshments, every hash has lots of friendly socializing, bawdy drinking songs, and obligatory “down-downs” of libations for the hare, newcomers, “rule violators,” etc. There are free vehicle shuttle rides (if necessary) to get everyone safely back to the Start.

Required Items to Bring:
Wear comfortable well-broken-in running shoes or hiking boots, long exercise pants, and perhaps a long-sleeved T-shirt and baseball cap. CAUTION! If you wear new shoes you may find yourself being asked to chug a beer out of one of them!
The weather is expected to be mostly sunny and beautiful Sunday (high in mid-60s!), so don't go overboard on clothing layers.
As mentioned above, bring $6 in cash to give the "Hash Cash" volunteer when we register for the event in the Start Area.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Per newly available info from the SOB hash group, this hash will have a hippie theme, so you may wish to wear a tie-dyed shirt, peace symbol necklace, etc.
If you like bring a compact folding chair and a small duffel bag with extra socks, hippie sandals, etc. to change into at the "On-In." Transportation is provided to get everyone's bags from the Start to the On-In during the hash.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:We found out (as of Feb 5) that this hash will be a bit farther out in the suburbs than most local hashes -- it’s about 35 miles E of downtown Atlanta in Covington. Feel free to join us at 12:45 PM for the optional (newly set up) carpool meeting point at Northlake Mall in NE Atlanta if you like, discussed below.

DIRECTIONS TO COVINGTON "START" AREA
from the East-side I-20/ I-285 Interchange which is 12 miles east of downtown Atlanta:
1) Take I-20 E toward Augusta for 23.8 miles.
2) Take I-20 Exit #90 toward Covington.
3) Merge onto Access Rd/GA-12/US-278 and continue to follow GA-12 for 0.8 mile.
4) Turn Right onto Emory St NW/GA-81 and go 0.5 mile.
5) Turn Left onto GA-81/Washington St SW, go just 100 yards, and look for "hashers" at a big circle with parking all around it.
6) After you park try to find Charlie (wearing a blue “tie-dye” hash shirt) and register with the SOB "Hash Cash" volunteer.
