Itinerary:
We'll do Half of the Hearty Coosa Backcountry Trail, 9 miles in all. Leaving Vogel Park, we'll go 6 miles counterclockwise to Calf Stomp Gap and then turn back along a scenic abandoned service road for a 3-mile descent back to Vogel. The 6 miles on the Coosa starts out moderate and ends up strenuous. The 3 miles back would be a piece of cake if you hadn’t already hiked 6 miles.

Our hikes are moderately paced with frequent stops to regroup or enjoy a view. This is not a hike for those looking to set speed records, but also not a hike for beginners. As always, the No Bitchin' rule is in effect.

Bring all the usual stuff for a 9-mile, 6-hour, winter jaunt in the mountains. If you don't know what that is, you should not be doing this hike - seriously.

Meeting at 9 am at the Indian Trail Park & Ride. We'll make a rest stop in Cleveland, before reaching Vogel. Dinner after the hike is at Sunflower in Cleveland. We've eaten here several times, and this NYC boy rates it as among the best American-style Chinese food I've eaten anywhere.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Leave the Park & Ride, make a left on Indian Trail and cross back over I-85. Get on I-85 northbound (left turn over bridge). Take I-85 to I-985 (bear left at GA-316 cut off to stay on I-85), and bear left again when I-985 veers off from I-85 (i.e., I-985 is to the left).

Take I85 to I985 to exit 24 in Gainesville. Turn left and turn right at the 3rd light; sign says “to Hwy. 129”. Continue to Hwy. 129 and go north to Cleveland. Stay on Hwy. 129 out of Cleveland. Vogel Park is about 20 miles past Cleveland, entrance on the left. We'll meet in the parking area across from the ranger station/store.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $48.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
