Itinerary:

The September Equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from north to south. On the Fall and Spring Equinox each year, the Sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal – but not exactly. In 2017, the autumnal equinox in Atlanta takes place at 4:02 p.m. on September 22.

We will mark the first day of Autumn with an evening hike to the top of Stone Mountain.  The sun will set at 7:33 p.m., so we will start our hike at 6:35.  This will give us plenty of time for a leisurely hike and some time to hang out on top to enjoy the evening. Bring your headlamp as we will be hiking down after sunset.

The Plan: We will meet in front of the Confederate Hall restrooms at 6:30 p.m. for introductions before we head to the top to watch the sunset. On the ascent, we will hike at a moderate pace on a side trail, rather than on the heavily traveled walk-up trail.  We will gain about 650 feet of elevation in just over one mile. We will climb the very steep portion of the mountain closest to the fence, but you will also have the option to connect to the walk up trail at the half way point and use the handrails for the steep section.

Please note that this event will be cancelled in the event of severe weather.
