Itinerary:

A few weeks back I paddled a beautiful section of the Loyd Owens Canoe trail on the Tallapoosa River near Heflin, AL. Now I want to share this awesome water trail with the AOC.  We'll be covering 16.7 miles of this small river and w e'll be shuttled to our start point by the Tallapoosa River Outfitters (TRO).  We'll meet at their parking lot at 10 AM Central Standard Time - which is one hour earlier than our time here in Georgia.

The first 11 miles or so it is likely we'll be the only ones on the river.  When I paddled this section at the end of July, I did not have to portage anywhere, but there were some tricky areas to navigate around due to fallen trees.  Because of this, the pace and  the over all distance we are covering (16.7 miles), this is not a good event for a beginner kayaker.    There are some class 1 rapids and if the water is up, perhaps a class 2 in a few spots, but for the most part we will maintain our pace through moderate paddling (I covered the section in 5 hours).  We'll find a spot or two to stop along the way for a quick break and to stretch our legs.

As a reminder, we'll meet at the TRO promptly at 10 AM Central Standard Time and they'll load up our kayaks (or canoes) on their trailer and shuttle us to our put in location at the Dryden Mill Campsite.

When we finish our paddle we'll have the option to head over to Tasty Dip in nearby Helfin, Alabama.  This old style restaurant, est. 1948, is a local favorite.  There we'll enjoy the wonderful selection of Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, and best of all.... wonderful ice cream - all under shaded picnic tables!  After our long paddle, we will have earned this tasty treat!
