Itinerary:

Lets hike the Kennesaw Mountain Loop from the Burnt Hickory side.  We will start at the Burnt Hickory/Pigeon Hill trail head. We will start with a climb up Pigeon Hill, the site of some of the most brutal fighting during the Kennesaw Mountain battle during the Civil War.  We will continue on, reaching the top of Little Kennesaw Mountain after about a 600 foot climb. Next we will head down to the gap between the Big and Little Kennesaw losing about 150 of elevation. Then we begin the final ascent of Big Kennesaw, gaining about 350 feet before reaching the summit which sits at 1808 feet of elevation.

After a break at the top to take in some of the history all around us along with some long range views of the skylines of Buckhead and downtown Atlanta, we will begin the one mile decent dropping about 800 feet of elevation before reaching the Visitors Center where we will take a break.

Next we will head out towards the old CCC camp on the Brumby Trail where we will learn a little about that camp.  Continuing on the Brumby trail, we will walk along the base of Big and Little Kennesaw before taking the Pigeon Hill Cutoff, finally reaching the parking lot and our cars.  Our hike will be about 6 miles in length, climbing about 1100 feet.

We will meet at the Burnt Hickory Road / Pigeon Hill parking lot near the kiosk at the top of the lot. Please arrive a few minutes early to allow us to depart at 10:00 am sharp.  Note there are no bathrooms at this parking lot so plan accordingly.  Parking is free at Kennesaw Mountain NBP.
