Itinerary:

I feel this message is important to put at the beginning and end of my hike description. PLEASE JOIN the only shamefully underpopulated remaining TRAIL maintenance event on National trails day! - our very local, close-short drive for many Kennesaw Mtn.  THERE IS NO GOOD EXCUSE for not having more people from a club that uses the outdoors, as a resource for enjoyment and relaxation; NOT TO give back to nature and boost the crowds at this one lowly signed trail maintenance event at Kennesaw Mtn. The more folks join, the easier it will be on all involved in working there; and you will meet other enviromentally concerned, and one of the jobs here is for several people to hand out literature!!! Heeellllloooo! work with me on this one!

As the hike to Coopers Furnace, relax-read the paper; go to early church service, or laze in bed and meet at the park and ride lot, at 11:30.

From the Chastain Road park and ride lot we travel about 14 miles to exit 285, turn left at the top and travel a little over a mile, looking for large red water treatment plant and brown sign, on the right, that reads Riverside Day Use park. It is about 1.5 miles down Allatoona Dam road to the parking pullout, on the right, and next to the Eagle Scout trailhead sign to Vinyard Mountain.

It's not quite the rockies at 1354'at its peak, but a good true steep moderate workout for dog and humans attending. We will take it slow to be easy on the fearless leader and humble servant of all, and dogs and especially folks worried about the steep ascent if you are in less than perfect shape aerobically.

I know I'm still working on my aerobic shape myself, early this year to get in better shape for longer hikes. This hike should be close to 5.5 miles in length; as we will go on an extra, 'there and back' side path to add two miles.  Only the hike up Vinyard Mtn. is a true 'D4', but its at the very beginning of the hike, so I've rated the hike accordingly. It's only 1/2 mile max of the total hike. I would only consider the rest of the hike a D3

After we are finished we will all return to the 'hubbub' and wonderful gifts that living the the big city, the ATL, have to offer.

Required Items to Bring:
  • A liter, quart of water or hydration fluid(s) of some sort.
  • Supportive hiking or walking shoes for the sometimes rocky surfaces here.
  • trail snacks and/or lunch for dining on at some point in the hike
  • THIS next item is one I DO NOT want to see on any of my hikes, a singular personal waiver with one signature representing new membership or new signee for the year. I consider it as leader my responsibility to bring a blanket, blank waiver for all newbies; as I did at Coopers Furnace. I believe any outdoor club that represents enjoying nature, should not be the cause of cutting down even one extra tree to serve waiver purposes. Thanks in advance to your attention to this detail. In an additional note, if any of you have any semblance of supporting the nature we all in AOC use in our outdoor adventures, PLEASE SIGN UP for one of the two remaining nearly empty fantastic choices of trail maintenance events on June 6th, and do your bit to pay back nature and the environment in general.  The work is never back breaking, and you only need do as much as your body can bear; and whichever trip you might join will be better for the extra help.
  • Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Camera for taking pics of DAM view at head of Lake Allatoona or spring wildflowers hopefully out in abundance this time of year
  • prayers for good sunny weather to match that we had at Coopers Furnace earlier in March.
  • as always, sense of adventure to see new places, meet new peeps; enjoy Gods handiwork expressed so eloquently in natures bounty and beauty

  • How to Get There:
    Event Directions:

From the CCT park and ride lot near Chastain Road exit 271, off of highway I-75 north; we travel 14 miles north to exit 285, signed for Red Top Mtn. tate Park. We turn left at the top of the exit, away from Red Top, to highway 41. Here we turn right and north on 41, a little over 1 mile, looking for the large red Water Treatment plant on the right, and the Riverside Day Use (brown sign)to turn right onto Allatoona Dam road. Follow it until almost the end and parking area on the right there, in front of the Eagle Scout sign and trail map board there.

The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

    Notes:

Pray for no thundershowers as they are untenable to hike in-dont need to add any more danger to that already presented by just driving in the ATL in general; thats death defying enough.

Our costs are only the shared gas expenses to give to your drivers
