Itinerary:
This will be a out & back,we will start at the Unicoi Gap (3,128) parking lot. Then head south starting out with a rock outcrop on the AppalachianTrail following up to Blue Mountain.(3,758) This will take us 4.3 miles to the Chattahoochee Gap where we will break. There we will turn right (north) on to Jack's Knob Trail for 2.5 miles to Georgia Route 180 (Jack's Gap 2,750) for another stop. After the stop our hike will start ascending up Jack's Knob (4,668) for 2 miles with a elevation gain of 1900 feet and 36 switchbacks!! Once tunneling out of the rhododendrons, we'll enter the Brasstown Bald parking lot. At the Visitor's Center there will be a bathroom break. From the V/C the group will take the paved walkway (optional if a clear view) for .6 miles (400 ft elevation gain) to the Observation Deck (4,784) for lunch. It will afford us a 360 view and 4 States. Then we will re-trace our tracks back to the Unicoi Gap parking lot. When we head back to the cars, there is the backside of Jack's Knob Trail across GA Route 180 that is very difficult. It has several Knobs to climb. Also the A/T in some parts, is very technical ( rocks & boulders). I am in no way going to sugar coat this hike! It is a HIGH D-6 - 20 miles and every bit of 6,200 feet or more of elevation gain close to a D-7.If you don't understand these numbers then this is not the hike for you!! You will be at least 7 to 8 hours ( with breaks) on your feet at a fast pace! Be honest with yourself about whether you have the physical ability and desire to do this event. If you sign up and I do not know your hiking ability, I will contact you to find out if I believe you are a good candidate for this trip. I reserve the right to remove any member from this trip, who in my opinion, may not have the physical ability to keep up with the group. Please no audible music on this trail, use your head phones!!
