Itinerary:
Join us for dinner and a bright, silvery full moon atop Blood Mountain, Georgia's tallest peak (elev. 4461 ft.) on the AT.  We will take the short but strenuous Byron Reece & Freeman Trails to a large outcropping at the top of the mountain where we will share a self-catered, picnic buffet.

The moon should arrive as we reach our picnic rock and the sun will set during dinner.  Dinner attire: Wear your best glow-in-the-dark accessories!  Astronomical twilight (when the sun no longer contributes to the sky's illumination) will occur roughly at 10:30 pm, when we will start down the mountain by moonlight and flashlight.  We should be back at the Park & Ride by 1:30 am.

The distance each way is 2¼ miles and rocky (hiking boots are highly recommended) with over 1400 ft. of gradual elevation change.  It's a climb.  The hike down is easy (not steep).

Required Items to Bring:
Food to contribute to the picnic buffett
1 or 2 flashlights/headlamps (every time we do this, at least one person's flashlight fails)
Fresh batteries for the flashlight
Warm outer clothing for after the sun goes down - it gets pretty cool at 4461 ft, even in June

Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
