Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.


THIS TRIP IS THE ICONIC RIM TO RIM GRAND CANYON HIKE FOR 3 NIGHTS WITH PLENTY OF TIME TO EXPLORE (SAFELY) AT THE BOTTOM NEAR THE COLORADO RIVER.  ALSO ARE POSSIBLE HIKES AT BRYCE AND/OR ZION FOR HOPEFULLY ADDITIONAL WONDERS AT ANGELS LANDING, THE NARROWS, ETC. SEE BELOW.  Regarding information concerning the D5 difficulty rating for this trip see under Additional Information about the D5 rating below. Notice: This web page is designed so that you can only put yourself on the waiting list. Once TLs verify that you satisfy the registration requirements you will be moved to the list of participants. See registration requirements below.

TL has secured 6 permits for 3 nights in the GRAND CANYON in early October, a typically very temperate time of the year! To round out this trip we will backpack Bryce and/or Zion. (Bryce and Zion require permits which cannot be reserved/issued until August 5 for October.)  (If all the options for permits at Bryce or Zion are closed out (highly unlikely) there are other good hiking trail options we will explore.)

Additional Information about D5 Rating: We will not exceed 10 miles (except possibly 11.5 mi. see below.) in any one day and the total miles will not exceed 55 miles over various terrain during the 9 days of hiking. You should be in good shape, able to carry a 30 lb. pack plus 3 liters of water over 10 miles a day with occassional sustained ascents of about 2500 ft. over 5 miles that you would expect leaving a deep canyon. (In Grand Canyon we will be staying over night half way up and out of the canyon.) Some D5 experience required preferrable with backpack.  

Day 1 Sat. Oct. 6  Fly into Las Vegas. Rent 2 cars, stay Las Vegas.

OPTIONS for: Days 2 - 4, Sun. - Tues. Oct. 7 - 9   AND   Days 9 - 11, Sun.  Tues. Oct. 14 - 16 

2. days: BRYCE CANYON backpack Under the Rim Trail (partial) 17 miles.  

1 day:  BRYCE CANYON Fairyland Loop day hike 8 mi. drive to Zion stay at hotel

2 days: ZION Backpack West Rim Trail 19 miles.  Includes Hike to Camp #4 on West Rim Trail 11.5 mi.;  Hike from Camp #4 to the Groto plus Angels Landing Spur 7.5 miles. Take free shuttle back to car Drive to Springdale for night.

2 days: ZION Backpack Top down Narrows 16 miles. Includes: Hike 9 miles to Ringtale or Right Bench camp sites. Hike 7 miles to Groto. Take shuttle  to Chamberlain's Ranch trail head. Drive to North Rim Grand Canyon.

These dates are firm for GRAND CANYON: 

Day 5 - 8 Wed. - Sat. 10/9 - 10/13 Backpack 24 mi. North Rim to South Rim. Tues. at North Rim Campground; Wed. 7.0 miles to Cottonwood Campground; Thurs. 7.2 miles to Bright Angel Campground; Fri. 4.9 mi. to Indian Garden Campground; Sat. 4.5 mile to south rim.  Shuttle back to north Rim 

Day 11. Tues. 10/16 drive back to Las Vegas and depart for Atlanta 12:42 pm. 


Registration Requirements. Note: to be officially registered a deposit of $350 is required (see below)


1. You must be either an AOC trip leader or be recommended by an AOC trip leader. This requirement allows event TLs to verify that you have the necessary level of fitness, will get along with others and follow TLs instructions. Please put yourself on the waiting list, and if you are not a trip leader please ask one to send a recommendation to Lindsey Williams (event TL). If you qualify, you will be moved to the list of participants, provided the maximum number of participants has not been reached. People that put themselves on the waiting list before you will have precedence.

2. After you are moved to the list of participants please send your $350 deposit by PayPal to Lindsey Williams.

Your registration for this event will be considered complete once your deposit is received. The order of precedence for this event is determined by the date and time your registration is completed. The balance of $200 must be received via PayPal to Lindsey Williams by August 15, 2018 to maintain registration. Otherwise you will be removed from participants list and forfeit your spot for the trip. Additional Notes: This event requires 6 people since costs of travel, permits and rooms associated with the trip are based on that number. This event is rated as Difficult (D5) because of backpacking with a full pack for approx. 55 miles and 7500 ft. elevation gain over 9 days. 

Each person will have to carry a full backpack plus water (3 liters per day) 

The lodging will be paid directly by TL event organizer to hotels. You have to pay for any additional hotel expenses (meals, laundry, telephone calls, etc.).

DISCLAIMER: The Trip Leader for this event has elected either to personally collect the funds that event participants are required to pay, or to require participants to pay funds directly to a third party. No funds will be paid to the Atlanta Outdoor Club for this event. Therefore, by registering for this event, you acknowledge and agree to the following: (1) the monies paid by registrants will not be monitored, managed, or otherwise accounted for by the Atlanta Outdoor Club; (2) that the Atlanta Outdoor Club bears no financial responsibility for this event; and (3) you waive any and all claims against the Atlanta Outdoor Club, and hold the Atlanta Outdoor Club harmless for the loss of any monies you paid for this event. Notwithstanding the foregoing, any paying registrant may request directly from the Trip Leader, prior to the event, a breakdown of funds collected, estimated expenses, and deposits made in anticipation of the event. Following the event, the Trip Leader must complete his or her financial accounting for the event, with supporting documentation, within 30 days of the completion of the event, and a paid registrant may request a breakdown of funds collected, money spent and supporting documentation after that time. If you are unable to obtain requested documentation, please contact the Director of Paid Events.

- 50 liter backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, ground cover.

Cost Includes:

COST INCLUDES: Car rental, gasoline, hotel in Las Vegas (2 people per room), hotel in Springdale, UT(2 per room), Hotel North Rim (2 per room) all park entrance fees and permits, shuttle transportation.

COST NOT INCLUDED: Airfare, meals, miscellanesous hotel expenses, personal expenses.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance: If you cancel on or before 8/15/2018 you will receive a full refund, less $20 admin. fee. There are NO cancellations after 8/15/2018 unless we can find a replacement for your spot, less $20 Admin. fee.
