Itinerary:

This series of hikes is designed to celebrate the beautiful collection of parks that we have in "our own backyard”, the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Administered by the National Park Service, the Chatt NRA offers miles of scenic trails, picturesque river views, and sightings of aquatic wildlife.

While the AOC frequently offers hikes at many of these parks, I thought it would be fun to hike all the branches, starting from the most northern (Bowmans Island) to the most southern (East and West Palisades).

Part 8: Johnson Ferry

This one of the smaller branches of the Chatt NRA, but still worth checking out...

We will hike most of the official trails of the park first, then head north along an easement which takes us through some fields and over some wide pipes that we must walk across at a couple of points.  These aren't difficult and when I was on this same hike recently, all 20 people just did fine on them, but if your balance is really bad or you get dizzy easily, this may not be the hike for you.  If you did fall, you would just slide about 3 feet into the water...which would not be good...but I don't think anyone will slip as it is pretty wide.  If it is raining that day and the pipes are wet, we will just skip that part of it and the hike will be a good bit shorter.

We will turn around just south of Morgan Falls dam, below Bull Sluice lake.   I didn't even know that this dam was here until recently but it is interesting to see at about the midway point for our hike.   According to wikipedia, Morgan Falls Dam is a small hydroelectric dam originally constructed in 1904 by Georgia Power to provide electricity for Atlanta's streetcars, it now provides enough power for about 4400 homes.

Total hiking time should be about 2 hrs...total distance about 5 miles.   The pace will be somewhat brisk (about 3+ mph) because this is pretty much completely flat with very little elevation change.
