Weather Update for Saturday AM:  The latest "spot forecast" for the Roswell-Norcross vicinity expects temperatures in the mid-70s at 9:00 AM, warming to about 82 at Noon - also about a 45% chance of a scattered shower or two, so let's each bring and carry some lightweight rain gear in case we need it. - Posted by Charlie Thu evening 7/12

IN a NUTSHELL:    Please join us for this volunteer Trail Maintenance opportunity at one of our favorite local hiking venues, the beautiful Jones Bridge unit of the Chattahoochee River Nat'l Recreation Area (CRNRA).  We'll gather at the "Ed Center" (a.k.a. "CREEC") where our Club will also host our big "Rock & Grill Fest" summer picnic later that same day.  Esp. since we AOCers are among the heaviest users of these scenic NRA units along the metro Atlanta river corridor, we appreciate our Nat'l Park Service partners' invitation to "give back" by pitching in with them to maintain and improve the Park's trails.  No previous experience is necessary and they'll provide the necessary tools, gloves, and expert project supervision, etc.

Our main focus for this work day will be to improve the walking surfaces and drainage of various sections of the trails.  (At other times the removal of invasive non-native vegetation may also be a priority - e.g., Chinese Privet, English Ivy, Kudzu, etc.)

EVENT TIMETABLE:  We'll be met at 9:00 AM at the Ed Center by our friend Dave Thomas of the Nat'l Park Service who is the CRNRA Volunteer Coordinator. See Directions below - Parking will be FREE.  After introductions, waiver signing and a safety briefing we'll accompany our Nat'l Park Svc. hosts to their chosen "focus area" for our trail work.   (Other volunteers from the general public will also likely be pitching in.)  We expect to be back at our cars by 12:30 PM.  I suggest that we each stash a light picnic lunch & beverage(s) in our cars which we can enjoy together there just after the project.  Also if there's enough interest you're welcome to join me for a leisurely hike along the River before we depart.

THANKS for VOLUNTEERING!  We're proud of our Club's long tradition of participating in such worthy projects that benefit the environment and the community.  Our Volunteer Events Committee was recently founded based on our recognition of how important these "give-back" efforts are, esp. to all who share our love for nature and the outdoors.  These work projects also help cement strong relationships with like-minded "partners" including our local, State and National Parks, "Friends of Parks" organizations and other conservation & community support groups - also strengthen our ties with key outfitters and providers of outdoor equipment.

Required Items to Bring:

1.  Long Pants and sturdy close-toed Boots or Shoes are a must - also we suggest that you wear a Cap and either Sunglasses or clear Safety Glasses.
2. If you have allergies, etc. bring your own Medications, etc. - also we suggest applying your own Sunscreen & perhaps some Insect Repellent just prior to the trail work. 
3.  Our Nat'l Park Service hosts will provide Drinking Water, Work Gloves, Tools, etc. that are needed for our trail work.   (But please hydrate prior to the event and consider stashing some water in your vehicle for consumption afterward.)

Recommended Items to Bring:

GPS Users can enter this concise Lat/Lon as your Destination Address, being sure to include the comma and minus sign:  33.9899, -84.2582

FROM GA HWY. 400 near ROSWELL, GA:
1.  Take Exit 7, GA-140, "Holcomb Bridge Road,
2.  Turn eastward (toward Norcross) and go about 4 miles  to the traffic light at Barnwell Rd. (CVS on right here & Kroger on left).
3. Turn Left onto Barnwell Rd and go about 0 .7 mile and look for the brown & white "Environmental Ed. Ctr" sign on your right.
4.  Turn Right into the small entrance road and go about 0.2 mile to the parking area where we'll gather for the project beside the big Ed Center building.

FROM INTERSTATE  I-85 in NE METRO ATLANTA near NORCROSS, GA:
1.  Take Exit 99, GA-140, "Jimmy Carter Blvd."
2.  Turn northwestward on GA-140 (toward Norcross and Roswell) and go about 6.6 miles to the traffic light at Barnwell Road.  (En route via GA-140 you'll cross Peachtree Industrial Blvd - where Jiimmy Carter Blvd. becomes becomes Holcomb Bridge Rd, and also cross the Chattahoochee River bridge.)
3. Turn Right onto Barnwell Rd and go 0.7 mile.  As discussed above look for the Ed Center entrance on your right beside the brown & white sign,
4.  Turn Right into the small entrance road and go about 0.2 mile to the parking area where we'll gather for the hike beside the big Ed Center building.
