Itinerary: | |||||||
The scenic Broad River, located in northeast Georgia 23 miles from Athens, has 70 miles of continuous navigable water. Most of the river is mild and has some wave trains and class I rapids along with some flat water. One section has exciting but easy Class II rapids, suitable for beginners yet fun for the more advanced paddler. The Broad also has a waterfall; an avoidable 5 ft drop which is a definite cheap thrill. The 6.5-mile section -The Broad- contains 7 shoals, each with individual ledges and sloughs. The keowee is a fun little boat that is rather like a beginner kayak. It is skirted like a kayak and sits low in the water, and is difficult to flip because of it's broad base. This makes it good for people unfamiliar with the kayak, though you will need some basic paddling skills in order to get anywhere. In the past, it has taken 5 to 6 hours to complete the trip. There is a good bit of paddling required, so participants should be prepared for a good workout. First time paddlers should be aware that we will not have time for extensive instruction prior to starting our trip down the river. We will spend a few minutes familiarizing people with their boats, and safety precautions, and off we go. If you are unsure about your suitability for this trip, please e-mail one of the trip leaders before signing up. | |||||||
