Itinerary:

Join use for kaying on the beautiful Broad River northeast of Athens Georgia. The total river distannce is 70 miles and winds it's way through the scenic countryside. The section of the river we'll be kayaking is suitable to beginers while still being fun for experienced paddlers. We'll be kaying for about 6 miles total distance over a number of class II rapids. There is one larger ... but avoidable... 5ft drop toward the end of this section. See the following link for the outfitters description of this section of the river. The only restriction for this event is that you should be a confident swimmer.

The outfitters website suggests 3-5 hours, including a stop for lunch, as the total kayaking time. I've set this event at 5 hours but we may finish in about 3 or 4 hours. Paddling on the river does require some upper body and arm strength. No preparation is required but you should expect that you'll get a good workout from all the paddling. The only other caution is sun exposure. Being on a river for 4 hours means you'll be in the direct sun for a long time. Also, the sunlight will be reflecting off the water for additional exposure. Sunscreen and appropriate clothing such as long pants and long sleeve shirts made of wicking material are recommended. NOTE: The degree of sun exposure can be deceptive. Please be cautious and use sunscreen.

The outfitter is well equiped with kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. You should bring a dry bag to store your lunch and personal items (keys, wallet, cash, etc. etc) while on the kayak. The shuttles bring kayakers back to the outfitters & parking area after the event. Also, the outfitter  has changing 'rooms' ...they look like shacks...for changing clothes after the event. Parking available at the outfitters but carpooling is recommended.

RAIN FORECAST: Since this is a water event, the event will be canceled if there is a high chance (50% or more) of thunderstorms and rain. The tripleader will send out information in advance on the forecast and will give 24 hour notice if the event is canceled.

OPTIONAL: For those who are interested, we will stop in downtown Athens GA after the kayaking for a bite to eat.
