Itinerary: | |||||||
Join me for a casual late afternoon hike at Sweetwater Creek State Park. We will be hiking the yellow, white, and red trails at a steady but not fast pace. Sweetwater is beautiful park to visit all year long with its scenery, rapids, mill ruins, and modern interpretive center. We will start our hike on the yellow trail which is a three mile loop that runs along the east side of Sweetwater Creek then breaks away into a hardwood forest. The flat part of this trail is lined with Mountain Laurel and leads us to a hill with 350 ft. elevation gain. The remainder of the yellow trail has some flat areas and rolling hills. We then return to the visitor’s center to pick up the white trail for the remaining five miles. This trail leads us through the Jack’s Hill area that was a farming community, past Jack’s Lake, and along a pretty stream to Sweetwater Creek. The trail then runs parallel to Sweetwater Creek and is the most scenic and rocky portion of the white trail. Where the white and red trails meet there is a rocky overlook where we’ll stop and have a quick snack and enjoy the scenery near the rapids. We’ll pick up the red trail for a short time to hike along the creek to the New Manchester Mill ruins. After the mill ruins we start on the white trail again and return to the visitor’s center. The plan is to complete the hike by 7:45 before it starts getting dark, so this hike will be starting promptly at 3:30. All of these trails have varied terrain with rocky areas, some stairs, and a short rock scramble. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. We will meet at the event, no carpool will be organized. Dogs are allowed on a 6 foot leash. Bring water for your dog. Entrance fee is $5.00 unless you have a Georgia State Park Pass. | |||||||
