Itinerary:

please not that I, bruce aldridge, will be leaving the event at 10-10:115am, whether we are finished or not to go to my church to pray about my recent health relapses, related to lack or extended relaxed breathing on events, as happened at Vinyard mtn. today.

We will all meet at the front of the visitor center at Kennesaw Mountain, slightly later than the Fitness hike, Please dont mix the two in your mind. This is mainly and daresay only to serve as a learning experience and casual walk, and will have NONE of the race pacing or workout value of the fitness hike.
So if you find yourselves amongst a group of binocular wielding, stand around to slowly moving people you will be with this group and its noble purpose and thanks to Jason, and  a few others, a relatively new activity to AOC. WE WILL learn to identify the birds that fill our air with their beautiful songs and sometimes gorgeous beyond proper decription colored selves. Some raptors common to the mountain here, as hawks that hang here may be seen as well. I have recently become a convert to bird watching, as my brother who resides in Traverse City, Michigan likes to and constantly does this and has shown me many new friends in the air, and aquainted me with all to few of their songs. That is me the lesser experienced of the two co-leads today. Jasons' commentary is in the following paragraphs.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, birds have the largest following of all wildlife in the United States. Birding is indeed a very rapidly growing hobby in the U.S. across all demographics. Perhaps its appeal lies in that it is accessible to anyone, can be done anywhere, and at any time of year. Of couse, like many things, it's also one more excuse to get outside and discover new places! If you are curious about learning to identify birds and their songs, please sign up for this trip!

Kennesaw Mountain is considered an "Important Bird Area" due to it's importance as a stopping-off point for migrating songbirds as the fly across the Gulf of Mexico every Spring and return in the Fall.  In Fact, it is probably the best destination in the Southeasterern U.S. for viewing the most species of neotropical migrants. WE can expect to see a few of the brilliantly colored migrants such as scarlet and summer tanangers (NOT teenagers!-a brightly colored but wayward humanoid species, quite different, compared to birds!-ba), indigo buntings and others. The group is being being kept relatively small so that everyone will have a chance to see each interesting bird before we move on to the next one. I will make every effort to give everyone personal attention. And, if you know me (or both of us), we'll have some laughs along the way. I can also address the following topics:

  • Difference between birding and bird-watching
  • Difference betweem resident birds and migratory birds
  • How to learn bird songs
  • What bird book to buy
  • How ipods can be used in birding (ultra cool)
  • Where to find groups to go birding with

Join us for this newly emerging AOC activity that will put you more in touch with the sights and sounds of nature, as opposed to rushing through it as the other event this morning does. I am NOT po-pooing such events, but they serve and entirely different purpose than this one, and I reiterate myself here,-- NOBLE purpose of learning, looking and listening to the beautiful sounds on these residents of our natural world

  • Required Items to Bring:
  • Weather appropriate clothes.
  • comfortable shoes 'cause most of the time we'll be on the pavement or mowed grass, or stepping on the soft, supple bodies of those on the other morning workout event, after collapse, if they get done that fast. (just kidding!!!!-they have their purpose, and we have ours.
  • You may want to consider, thin sun and poison ivy resistant pants, ivy unfortuately grows here in abundance and invades the fringes of many paths here at Kennesaw.
  • trail snacks of your choosing, and some small amount of water. NO need for lunch, as we will be done by that time.
  • Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Binoculars stongly recommended if you have a pair-I know I just bought an inexpensive but very sharp, compact, and lightweight pair--NO need to spend a fortune to get into very sharp optics!
  • bird field guide, if you have one (people can share as well)
  • light rain jacket if showers are a possibility in the forecast, trip will be cancelled if there is a steady rain or heavier forecast is imminent. Sunscreen if sun is supposed to be unobstructed by clouds this day
  • Bug spray, if they happen to get bothersome
  • camera, if you want to take people pics as well
  • notepad or some sort, if you wish to take notes on birds (I will try to get checklists to pass out to those who want them).

  • How to Get There:
Event Directions:From I-75 take exit 269 (Barrett Parkway). At the stoplight turn left onto Barrett parkway (if coming from the north you would turn right). Follow Barrett Parkway for approximately 3 miles, turn left at the ligth, onto Old Highway 41. Turn right at your next light, Stilesboro Road (the park is imminently on display from this light), and pull into the Visitor center parking lot. We'll meet outside the visitor center.

Please note there is the earlier meeting group, hopefully will be on their speedy way by the time we arrive and sign waivers, some thirty minutes after their group.

    Notes:
As always, with any events that bear posted by me, Bruce Aldridge I ask, beg, plead do NOT bring seperate waiver with your singular signature! as our site currently endorses

(This will be changed in the future according to my great friend and pres. of AOC), after other more important site problems are dealt with). I trust her implicitly in this detail it is in the works for AOCs' future.

For now I, am responsible for bringing the waivers, one for veteran signees and event participants, and the second waiver for new signees for the year, newbies to AOC and non-member.  I am, as the leader, SOLELY for bringing waivers!!!! I do not want to be the cause of wasting even one branch of a tree, let alone the whole thing--I am still learning to conserve at home and elsewhere myself.
    * We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

Cost Includes:a bit of your time to take up this newly emerging and great purposed event, to get more in touch with the natural world that surrounds us!

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.
*Note: Please be considerate, and remove yourself from the event asap if you cant make it for any of the many things that come up in real life, so others can enjoy this experience.
