Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

We have previously led in & out paddles from Lake Rabun Beach Recreation Area, but this time we're going to paddle to The Rabun Boat House.  So this is listed as exploratory since we've only paddled half of this route.

Lake Rabun is a twisty 835-acre reservoir with 25 miles of shoreline located in the Northeastern corner of Georgia in Rabun County. It is the third lake in a six-lake series that follows the original course of the Tallulah River.

The lakes are owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company to generate hydroelectric energy for Atlanta. At one time these lakes were the largest producers of electricity in the state of Georgia. Now, they only provide peak power supply.

Due to the large growth of Atlanta in recent years, Lake Rabun has become a second home to some of the most wealthy and politically connected individuals in the state of Georgia. Although Lake Rabun has experienced a huge housing boom due to leased lots by the Georgia Power Company, most home owners are summer weekend residents. Due to the small size of the lake and strong home owners association, and powerful board members, the lake has resisted many attempts to further commercialize and potentially damage its quaint appeal.

This paddle is suitable for beginners, but remember that it is flat water, so consistent paddling will be required and wind conditions can effect the level of difficulty.

This is a bring your own boat (kayak or canoe) event and you must be able to obain your own equipment.

Thanks to Ray Steed (PTO) and his wife, Jeanne, for introducing us to this fabulous gem!

NOTE: Lake Rabun Beach Recreation Area has a $5.00 daily vehicle fee.

Please be prepared to eat your lunch/snack in your boat as we are unsure if there will be a place to stop along the way.  Most of the shoreline is privately leased, but if we can find a spot to stop, we will.

We will meet at the put-in and unload, then will shuttle some vehicles to the take-out.
