Itinerary:

This series of hikes is designed to celebrate the beautiful collection of parks that we have in "our own backyard”, the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Administered by the National Park Service, the Chatt NRA offers miles of scenic trails, picturesque river views, and sightings of aquatic wildlife.

While the AOC frequently offers hikes at many of these parks, I thought it would be fun to hike all the branches, starting from the most northern (Bowmans Island) to the most southern (East and West Palisades).

For details on the other hikes in the series, visit the AOC forums...

Part 4: Jones Bridge

This is one of my favorite units of the park system because it offers a variety of terrain and views...you start out along the river for quite awhile and there are frequent sightings of ducks, geese, and blue heron.  Then you move up into the woods with some mild hills   We also hike by a lake and through a couple of nice fields and meadows.

I lead hikes at this park quite often, but this time I will make it a bit different and we will try to cover most all of the official trails inside the park, as well as a couple of side trails.  This means we will be covering some of the same ground twice with extra loops, but it should still be fun and interesting.

The total distance should end up being around 8 miles with approx 700 or 800 feet of total ascent.   So this will be a solid D3.   Even though this is not a fitness hike, those miles add up.  However, the route is mostly flat and you can take the small hills at your own pace.  This event is more to enjoy the company and see all of the park than it is to get a great cardio workout...however if the weather is nice and we do the full 8+ miles, it can't help but be good for you in that respect as well.

Note: $3 parking fee at this park unit.
