Itinerary:

After dropping two AOC potential co leads from AOC for different reasons, I have gotten  a willing and capable co - lead from SOA my old hiking group, who so far have three people joining us, as it was added late to their calendar.

This event was very popular on July 5th, so I am doing this again for people that enjoy the slow pace and listening to the songs and viewing Gods creatures of the air that sing for us no charge everyday, in our backyards

I am working hard on my knowledge of local and backyard birds, and will be bringing a bird book of common backyard and eastern Us birds, with their respective songs (which I have been learning my back yard birds from), to aid me and anyone wanting to be helped along on Saturdays trip.

PLEASE make NOTE we are meeting at 7:45am to sign waivers, before beginning at 8am. Birding is better in the morning as birds are much more active and vocal in the cool of the morning, which hasnt been much lately; so we are starting earlier both days to take advantage of cooler temps, that the birds like better as well. Event duration will be the same 3 -4 hours. Bring PLENTY of water and hydrating fluids as Gatorade or similar.

The walk and bird listening and watching stroll, will be starting at the Kennesaw Mtn. Natl. Battlefield visitor center will take us on a slow weaving start around the rather open wooded grounds around the visitor center to listen for the birds that are in the mountain community there; most being common to our backyards as well, including the red tailed and other hawks often seen here.
I will bring a backyard birds of Eastern America book with pictures and very authentic recorded bird calls and sounds to help identify these beautiful sonic delights that inhabit our backyards and around our houses and apartments, on Saturday .

We will wind past the visitor center and onto the gently rolling hills of the 'bunny trail around the base of the mountain; all the time adopting the method taught me (and our lucky group) Jason Baumgartners ways of listening first and then looking for the bird making the song. Binoculars are highly suggested for anyone wanting to see the creatures of the air that make the lovely and multi-varied songs that we hear every day in our lives and pay too little attention to the details and structure of every song and to whom it belongs.

We will end up at the large circle around the CCC conservation camp and walk the circle around it and inside of its large open expanse and try to spy the birds all around the interior wall of trees. This should take a great deal of time; but if it happens to go faster than expected we will walk more of the winding trails around Kennesaws base After the hike and coming back to the parking area, if several of us have struck a good bond we can dine at a nearby very excellent Mexican restaurant before heading back home and to our lives.

Required Items to Bring:

  • good supportive walking shoes
  • a liter or quart of water or more for the extended walk about four miles
  • binoculars are highly suggested if you want to see the birds as well as hear them
  • trail snacks to keep your energy up
  • Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

As always your sense of wonder for the lilting sounds of Gods creatures of the air that freely entertain us daily with little of our attention or affection in the details

    How to Get There:
Event Directions:From almost anywhere in Atlanta the exit to get off to be closest is exit 267b off of I-75 north of the perimeter by several miles. when you exit the looping exit stay straight and bear right to Highway 41. When you get to hwy.41, turn right and travel about 1/2 mile (maybe less) to the light at Bells Ferry Road. Turn left here, at the light; and travel a very short distance (city blockish) to the right hand turn onto old highway 41. Follow this some two miles until Kennesaw Mtn. and its extended green lawn and fences mark it.  Turn left past all the fencing at the overhanging traffic signal.  You make and almost immediate left turn into the parking area-find a spot and meet your mellow, tuned into nature leader in front of the visitor center. Look for his very green wide brimmed sun and hiking hat for hotter temps I will be sporting on Saturday
