Itinerary:

Looking for a last minute leg stretcher this week?  Join me hiking the trails on and near Powers Island.  Powers Island was the location where the James Power family maintained a ferry across the Chattahoochee River from 1835 to 1903,  when a bridge was built nearby over the Chattahoochee River rendering the ferry obsolete.

We will meet at the parking lot located at Riveredge Lane, Sandy Springs, GA (site of the NOC outpost).  Street address is 5450 Interstate North Parkway, Sandy Springs, GA.

We will depart from the back, right corner of the parking lot (farthest from the bathroom facility).  We will hike along an old woods road bed as we make our way upstream.  After a short distance we will turn right and begin the only climb of the hike, We will cross literally fields of English Ivy which have taken over the cove as we make our way to the top of the hill.  The climb only gains 200 feet but is steep enough to get your heart pumping.  We will descend back down to the river and make our way a bit further upstream for some good views of the river.  Heading back downstream we will utilize a different trail which ends back at the parking lot.

But we are not done yet.  We will cross the bridge over to Power’s Island itself and complete the loop trail out to the end of the island and back.  Back to the parking lot, and we will finish our 3 mile hike in about 1:30 hours.   Other than the one hill climb described, the hike is fairly flat and suitable for beginners.
