Biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail

Greenville, SC

Optional Post Event Lunch & Beverage

Greenville South Carolina’s Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 22 mile long, multiuse trail that runs through the beautiful Reedy Falls Park in downtown Greenville. See the image above for this spectacular downtown waterfall park! We’ll ride approximately 12.5 miles (out & back) of this 22 mile trail for a ride of 25 miles in total. We’ll start in downtown Greenville, circle through Reedy Falls Park, and then make our way about 10-12 miles north, and finally double back toward downtown. This trail is a multiuse trail much like the Silver Comet, Alpharetta Greenway, and Arabia-Panola Mountain trails in Atlanta. Traffic is limited to pedestrians, joggers/runners, cyclists and the occasional …pesky…baby stroller. The grade is fairly shallow (see the Steepclimbs article below) and should be fairly easy riding. We will keep a moderate pace of about 10-12 mph. You should be in reasonable physical shape to complete this ride. A road or hybrid bike is best for this trail.

This is an exploratory ride since the trip leaders have never been on the trail. However, there is plenty of info online about the trail and it should be fairly manageable. Look to the video below for a quick overview of the trail. Then read the more detailed article on the ride characteristics of the trail. According to this article the northern stretch of the trail has only a 2% grade going north. That should be very easy riding. Also, make note that the areas near downtown will be fairly active with people and the descriptions indicate there are a number of street crossings. So we’ll be navigating these sections carefully.

The location of the trail is spectacular. Reedy Falls Park is the main image above and it’s located right in downtown Greenville. According to the video there are a number of funky, quirky neighborhoods we’ll ride though along the way. This is much like the Beltline in downtown Atlanta. After the bike ride, we’ll find a place overlooking Reedy Falls Park for some food and beverages. We’ll head back to Atlanta about 4-5pm….ish.

NOTE: The Swamp Rabbit Trail is very popular and we'll likely be sharing the trail with other riders, walkers, joggers, and baby strollers. You are responsible for your bike maintenance and/or repairs on the trail. Other AOCer's will be willing to provide what help they can. But ultimately individual riders are responsible for any repairs. Make sure you complete a pre-ride maintenance check a day or two prior to the event.

Also, a bike Helmet is required. No helmet, no ride. See the NHTSA site for info on bike helmets - https://www.nhtsa.gov/road- safety/bicyclists.
