This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Standing at 4040 feet above sea level with 1008 foot of prominance, Horsetrough Mountain clocks in at Georgia's 21st highest peak when using 160 feet of prominance as the cut off.  Horsetrough lies just off of the Applachian Trail and is part of the Mark Trail Wilderness.

For this hike, we will take the southern approach starting our hike at Hogpen Gap on GA348.  We will head north on the AT.  Leaving Hogpen Gap, we hike through several moderate ups and downs, pass to the right of Strawberry Top (3,710') at mile 1.6 and passing over Sheep Rock Top (3,575').  After this we will decend to Poplar Stamp Gap (3,350') at mile 5.6.

This is where we will go off trail.  Where the AT veers right around the mountain, we will stay straight, following a moderately steep ridgeline for just over a mile to the summit.  After a well deserved lunch, we will begin to backtrack and hike back the way we came to Hogpen Gap.

Up to 2 well behaved dogs will be allowed on this hike.

We will make a quick stop in Cleveland at the Chic-Fila on our way up.

Disclaimer:  I've hiked Horsetrough before, but from another direction.  This looks pretty straight forward on the map and with a gps should be no problem.  But as with any offtrail adventure, conditions can be a surprise.
