The Nature Club of the Chattahoochee Nature Center invites you to participate in our February 28th "Dine & Discover" gathering. Join us for a festive Potluck Dinner (7:00 - ~7:30 PM) and mingle with folks with similar environmental interests. Then keep your seats for a fascinating presentation (7:30 - ~9:00 PM) - see more below. All who have an interest in nature and the environment are invited! Ages 16–Adult, $10 general public/ $5 CNC members. Event Details ~ Speaker Chris Showalter will focus on the dominant tree species that exist in the Piedmont forests around metro Atlanta and the birds that call them home.
Have you ever been out with a group on a nature walk or a bird walk when someone from the group yells out something like this “Tanager in the Black Gum” and at that moment you realize that you actually don’t know what a Black Gum tree looks like. If something like this has happened, then this is the class for you! There are over 200 native and non-native tree and shrub species found in the Atlanta area, however 95% of the cover is made up by about 25 common species. The class will focus on these 25 or so dominant species that exist in the Piedmont forests around the metro Atlanta area.
IN a NUTSHELL: Over the decades we Atlanta Outdoor Club hikers and nature lovers have become big fans of the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC) and are delighted that we share the same mission of "connecting people with nature." The CNC has a thriving "Nature Club" and they've graciously invited us to participate as often as we like in their "Dine & Discover" meetings - normally the 4th Thursday evening of each month, Jan - Oct, in the CNC's "Plaza Conference Room." Each meeting begins with a delicious Potluck Dinner and concludes with a Presentation on a topic of interest relating to Nature and the Natural World. The February 28th topic will be ". Chris Showalter is an Ornithologist with the Fernbank Science Center - Please bring $10 in cash to chip in to the CNC meeting registrar (for admission and parking - or $5 if you're a CNC member or regular volunteer). POTLUCK DINNER DETAILS, 7:00 - 7:30 PM: Hope you can arrive in time to join us for this festive and friendly monthly Nature Club dinner that will precede the above-discussed presentation in the same "Plaza Conference Room" - see Directions below. Please bring a food or beverage item of your choice to contribute - preferably something that you enjoy personally, and no need to provide more than about a half dozen servings of your chosen item. The predominant style of the dinner is Vegetarian. The Nature Center's policy is to minimize disposable plastics, etc. and they'll provide washable plates, cups, dining utensils, etc. for everyone to use. MORE about the CHATTAHOOCHEE NATURE CENTER (CNC): Located on a beautiful 127-acre site overlooking the Chattahoochee River in Roswell, GA (just upstream of "Morgan Falls") the Nature Center features an amazing variety of gardens, woodlands, meadows, ponds & wetlands, native plants and wild animals that showcase the natural beauty of Georgia. Its professional staff and hundreds of member-volunteers are known especially for their dedication to protecting and promoting our state's native wild flora & fauna.
