Itinerary:

DUE TO THE RAIN PREDICTIONS AND A HIGH OF ~45F THIS OVERNIGHT BACKPACKER IS NOW A WET DAYHIKE.

Come and find out why Panthertown Valley (http://www.panthertown.org) is referred to as the Yosemite of the East.

You need to be comfortable hiking ~12 miles with a few hills. If you are allergic to water, please do not sign up since there are several water crossings (normally ankle to knee depth depending on weather).

The carpool will leave SATURDAY MORNING AT 6:30 AM. For anyone that likes to arrive fashionably late, you will only find a fashionably desolate parking lot. It is about a 2.5 hour drive to Cashiers NC and the west parking lot.  We will start with a view off the Overlook Trail (visibility depends on weather), proceeding to Riding Ford Falls (1), Jaybone Falls (2) & Warden Falls (3).  Next is Schoolhouse Falls (4), Mac's Falls (5), Pothole Falls (6) & the largest; Greenland Creek Falls (7).  Hiking back to the cars we will hit Granny Burrell Falls (8), Frolictown Falls (9) & finally Wilderness Falls (10).

On the way back home we will make a dinner stop in Clayton. If you were counting that 10 waterfalls.  Panthertown Valley has a maze of trails so we WILL be collecting the group at every intersection.

Most of the hike is pretty easy with a couple of mild climbs.  Being a VALLEY we will be hiking down which means you will have to hike back up!   There are (several) water crossings and few spots on the trail that can be a little challenging navigating over wet rocks by the water.

Dogs are permitted. Aggressive dogs (and backpackers) are not acceptable. If you hate the smell of wet dog, you may want to find another hike since odds are there will be wet dog.

Required Items to Bring:

Snacks (we will break at a shelter in the valley for ~30 minutes)

Water (I will have a water purfifier)

Warm Clothes & Rain Gear.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

Change of dry clothes to keep in the car.

Camera?

Guitar and/or Ukulele?

Giant Bear Suit?

I really don't care what you want to bring with.  But whatever you have to enjoy the great outdoors has to be carried out!

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $104.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

There are bears in the Panthertown Valley.  You do not need to outrun the bear, you just need to outrun the slowest person in the group.
