Itinerary:

Let's hit the North Carolina Appalachian Trail for a relaxing overnight backpacking trip on top of beautiful Siler Bald. We will begin our adventure at Winding Stair Gap, passing by a lovely little waterfall right away. Heading northbound on the AT, we will cross a couple of branches of Moore Creek as we head steadily but gradually up. We will take a break midway up to enjoy a light lunch or snacks trailside. We'll pass through Swinging Lick Gap, Panther Gap, and Snowbird Gap before reaching our campsite at just under 5 miles.

Here we will set up camp and then you will have some free time to enjoy as you please. Perhaps you'd like to savor the nearly 360 degree view from the top of the Bald and get some autumn photos. Or you could read a book as the breeze ruffles your hair. Advanced hikers may prefer to hike down to Wayah Gap and back. Regardless of your fancy, we will all pitch in to gather firewood and assist one another with camp chores. We will share dinner and conversation and perhaps some live music around the campfire before retiring for a great night's sleep. Sunday morning, we will take our time breaking camp and heading back down to civilization. Your Trip Leaders plan to stop for a late lunch on the way home to break up the drive.

This event is suitable for all backpackers regardless of backpacking experience level. In fact, one of your TLs is a beginner and the other is advanced. We will learn from one another. However, we do expect that attendees will have some recent D3/D4 hiking experience with the AOC.
