Itinerary:

The Shining Rock Wilderness and surrounding area is a great place to spend a weekend wandering around but people don't always have time for that. This trip is for those busy people who would love to check it out but can't devote an entire weekend. Please plan on being out ALL DAY and do not make any other plans on Saturday because it is a roughly 3hr drive each way and a long scenic hike.  I would like to stay for sunset so we may be getting back very late in the day if the weather cooperates.

The event has many great views along the roughly 11 mile route. The starting place and direction may vary depending on parking availability and the weather. None of the ascents on the hike are huge but there are many moderate climbs of several hundred feet that do add up. Additionally some of the trail is very eroded which has you going up and down through some ditches that are up to a couple feet deep in places.

We will be taking a leisurely pace with a lot of stops to enjoy the views. I've been dealing with various injuries and working too much so I can promise this won't be a fast hike.

Required Items to Bring:

Lunch, Plenty of Snacks, Dinner

Clothing appropriate for the mountain weather. Please note that there is not much shade along the route.

Water. Bring as much as you will need for the entire day. It is unlikely that the water sources will be flowing with how dry it has been lately.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $132.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

*Note: There is another AOC event meeting at the same carpool location at the same time. Be sure to find the correct group.

You may also want to drive yourself so that you can cut down on some of the drive by staying in the area Friday and/or Saturday night.  If you choose this option please be at the trailhead ready to hike by 9:30 AM.

* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.
