Itinerary:

Join me on a fun adventure to the Albert Mountain Fire Tower and Pickens Nose in beautiful North Carolina. This is a 17 mile hike with 3500 feet of elevation gain.

We will start our adventure in the Standing Indian Campground at the Back country Information station (kiosk). We will start on the Long Branch Trail (trail #86, blue blaze) for 1.8 miles until we intersect the AT. We will continue our generally uphill climb by turning right on the AT for 3.2 miles. At this point we will be at the top of Albert Mountain with a 360 degree view from the fire tower. After enjoying the view we will continue on the AT, on a short, STEEP descent off of Albert and begin our pass by of BIG BUTT MOUNTAIN. At the 6.5 mile mark we will turn left on a service road for a .75 mile road walk. Here we will come to the trailhead for the Pickens Nose Trail. A short .7 miles on this trail will take us to Pickens Nose where we will stop to explore and eat our lunch. After lunch we will retrace our steps back to the cars to complete our out and back adventure.

Our moving speed will be on the high side of moderate with periods of FAST hiking. The last 5 miles will be mostly downhill and FAST.

This is a strenuous hike and requires recent D5 experience with the club to join the fun. I reserve the right to move under-experienced hikes to the wait list.
