Itinerary:

Ok, so Victor and I have led over 50 hikes to Yonah Mountain, but never to the surprisingly impressive Yonah Mountain Falls.   I wasn't even aware of the the falls until last year, and it took multiple visits to find a good route to them, as well as a smaller waterfall near the trailhead (a friend has dubbed it "Parking Lot Falls").

The route to both is mostly off-trail, with some steep terrain, but nothing technical or risky.  Just mainly a lot of slow and steady hiking up and down some of the beautiful ridges of Yonah.  And this is the perfect time of year to do this route, with the leaves down and the winter views....and less concern for spiders and snakes, etc.  The terrain there is open and no fighting through briars or similar...just a delightful, though strenuous, walk throught the woods

Also, the water table is higher this time of year, and the falls should be flowing well, especially if there is a good amount of rain on Saturday.   The forecast for Sunday is "Mostly Sunny" with a high of 44 in Cleveland, so looks like a perfect day for this kind of hike.

There is about 2500' ascent on the route, even though it is only about 5 miles.  Because of the elevation gain and steeper than usual climbs (and descents), this is a D5 event.  However, we will be going pretty slow..probably around 1.5 MPH or less.  The first big climb gains 1100' in just 0.7 mi., so we will take our time and just methodically work our way higher.  Then will be an 800' descent to the main waterfall and back up another ridge to the main trail where we will do more of a standard route to the summit and usual overlooks.

Trekking poles are highly recommended, and if you have some footwear traction devices like microspikes, they would be helpful on loose leaves or any muddy areas.  I know they are designed for snow and ice, but I wear mine fairly often in the mountains when hiking off trail.

It should be a great day to be on magical Mount Yonah and hope you can join us !
