Itinerary: | |||||||
This is Part 2 of the Park & Play series. It is an urban hike with a distance of approximately 4 miles. There is an optional free Arts Festival at Piedmont Park you may attend after the hike. The Marta train will take us to the North Avenue Station where we will exit and walk towards West Peachtree Street. We will turn right onto Ponce De Leon Ave. NE, then left onto Peachtree Street. The historic Fox Theater will be on our left. This venue is the home of the Delta International Series, bringing song and dance from around the world to Atlanta. After walking several blocks, we will pass by the Margaret Mitchell House. The famous author lived here from 1925 to 1932. This is where she wrote her Pulitzer prize-winning novel, "Gone with the Wind," published in 1936. Following 10th Street, we will walk on the outside of Piedmont Park, often compared to a smaller version of New York City's Central Park. We will make our way around the perimeter to the Park Drive Bridge entrance. Here we will begin our hike around the entire Park Loop; we will shift gears from the concrete and asphalt of the roads, to the soft, compacted dirt of the park trails. There will be a few elevation changes throughout our hike around the park as we pass ball fields, the lake, and a large meadow. Piedmont Park also has spectacular views of the city with the openness of the outdoors. After our hike around the park is complete, everyone is welcome to stay and enjoy the free activities of the Atlanta Arts Festival. There will be an Artists Market, an Acoustic Café, and food and beverages until 6pm. An ATM, restrooms, and information booth will be located at the end of our hike stop. | |||||||
