Itinerary:

***The hike will start at 7:30 AM, so please plan on meeting prior to that time  to sign in.  If you arrive at 7:30 AM, you should see our backpacks heading up the trail - catch up with us!  Please park in the area on old US Hwy 41 this early in the morning as the gate to the main parking lot does not open until 7:30 AM.  Allow a few minutes to walk from old US 41 to the vistors center.***
.
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a fantastic area for intown hiking and fitness training.  Training for an upcoming hike, backpacking trip, or trek?  This is a great place to prepare for it, and the right event for it.
.
We will start at the visitors center which has a rather nice museum and movie on the battles here in 1864. Afterwards, we will hike the 1.2 miles to the 1808 ft. top of Kennesaw Mountain. From there, we will head across Little Kennesaw Mountain, cross Burnt Hickory Road for a 10 minute rest break, and then return to the visitors center hiking back over Little and Big Kennesaw Mountains.
.
The total hiking distance is about 5 miles with minimum rest breaks. Endurance is the name of the game today. You should be good to excellent condition!!  Many people underestimate the level of difficulty involved with crossing the mountains twice.  It is strenuous.
.
There is an option to stretch out the hike an additional 2.5 miles or so and by roughly 1 hour by looping around Noses Creek from Burnt Hickory before heading back over the mountains.  This will be offered while at Burnt Hickory Road and decided upon based on the desires of the group.
.
REMINDER:  This hike is intended for intermediate to advanced hikers with prior D4 hiking experience.  As this is a fitness hike, the pace will be your own.  We will sync up at Burnt Hickory Road.  All speedsters so far ahead that they begin their trek back to the visitors center prior to everyone making to Burnt Hickory for the break must check in with a trip leader on their return.  (But you'll miss the optional extra loop option.  Hike in place if you are one of these people)  Also, it can be very HOT and humid these days, so hydrate well on Saturday as well as during the hike on Sunday.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:I-75 North to the North 120-Loop Exit (if you are heading north on I-75, you will see the South 120-Loop Exit just prior to the North 120-Loop Exit), turn left off the exit going under I-75 to US Hwy 41.  Take a right on US Hwy 41 (heading north) until you get to Bells Ferry Road.  Take a left onto Bells Ferry Road (heading west).  Take a right onto Old US 41 (heading north) until you pass in front of the mountain.

Important Note: Old US 41 is closed in order to replace the CSX railroad bridge.  The signs will guide you to get onto Stilesboro road which is a left turn.  Don't turn left, but rather head straight through the barricades.  There is room to drive your car through them.  There is a small sign indicating overflow parking beyond the signs so it's okay.  Park beyond the Stileboros Road redlight and barricade on either side of the road.

Meet prior to 7:30 AM at the cannon outside the main entrance of the visitors center.  Call the trip leader if you are running late so we know you are trying to catch us on the trail.
